Notes - Joel Atkins, who had established his household by 1850,was born in Tennessee, so his father, Spencer, must have moved from his home state of Virginia, to Tennessee, before the family moved to Mississippi and then to Alabama. Joel's wife, Mahaley, was born in either Tennessee or Georgia.Joel, one of six voters in his family in the Vails/Trulls Beat area, owned land in Trulls Beat valued at $1,000, in 1870.His other property was valued at $ 650. He was a good citizen of the area. As early as 1867 he was serving his community on a road committee. He was an election official in 1888,and his sons followed in his footsteps. Possibly, they followed his footsteps in politics, as well. Joel was a strong Democrat and in 1892, he was a member of the Democratic Executive Committee from Vails Beat. A short time later, in Aug. of 1895, Joel died. He left a wife and nine children to mourn his passing, along with land in three sections of Township 17, Range 16, West, as well as lots 35 and 36 in Fernbank, Alabama. Otherwise, his estate was valued at $1,148.54.
Joel was buried in Ebenezer Church Cemetery near Fernbank, AL. His wife is also buried there.
